Our family at Cheetah Outreach is growing with the recent arrival of four new animals.  Malaika ('angel' in Swahili), a beautiful young female caracal, was born last June at Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary in Johannesburg.  Male and female black-backed jackals, Moya and Ntombi, were born in August and raised with Malaika at the zoo.  Moya and Ntombi are Xhosa words for 'wind' and 'girl'.

These hand-reared animals have come to Cheetah Outreach to help us raise awareness about the plight of predators on South African farms and to highlight our Anatolian guard dog programme. 
Caracals and jackals are species that are highly persecuted by farmers in Southern Africa who see them as vermin.  Placing Anatolian shepherd dogs on farms in South Africa to guard livestock reduces conflict with caracals and jackals as well as cheetahs.

Sebastian, a two-year-old meerkat, has come to us from Moholoholo Rehab Centre in Limpopo Province.  Since Moholoholo has so many animals to care for, they weren’t able to give Sebastian the level of attention that they felt he needed.  Cheetah Outreach offered to give him a home and the kind of interaction this very social animal needs.  In the short time he has been here, he has won the hearts of all staff and volunteers with his engaging character.
